Signs and Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder can present in different ways from person to person, with some people internalizing their symptoms more (this has been nicknamed “quiet BPD”) and others externalizing their symptoms more. To get diagnosed with BPD, you must experience at least five out of the following symptoms, alongside other criteria.
- Frantic or drastic efforts to avoid real or perceived (imagined) abandonment
- Patterns of repeated unstable and intense interpersonal relationships (e.g., friendships, romantic relationships) marked by alternating extremes of idealization or pedestalization and devaluation
- Unstable moods, which may manifest in intense bouts of anxiety, irritability, or depression and typically last somewhere from a few hours to a few days
- Impulsivity manifests in at least two ways. For example, reckless driving, unsafe sex, spending excessive amounts of money, or substance abuse
- Trouble controlling your anger or inappropriate and heated displays of anger
- Fleeting, stress-related paranoid ideation or serious dissociative symptoms
- Repeated suicidal threats, behavior, or gestures, or self-harm behaviors
- Persistently unstable sense of self
- Chronic feelings of emptiness
At 90210 Recovery, we have compassionate and affirming professionals who are versed in diagnosing BPD. These providers are able to give evaluations and diagnoses if needed, whereas our therapists and psychiatrists are here to provide individualized mental health treatment for BPD and other specific concerns or conditions you face.

The Connection Between BPD and Substance Addiction: Why Dual-Diagnosis Treatment Matters
People with borderline personality disorder and other mental health conditions are at a higher risk of substance abuse. Not only can substance abuse or misuse stem from impulsivity in some cases of BPD, but it can be a form of self-medication. BPD causes extreme emotional pain for the person experiencing it, and without proper treatment, coping with this emotional pain can feel difficult or impossible. That is why 90210 Recovery specializes in dual-diagnosis treatment. Our dual-diagnosis treatment center in California addresses substance use disorders and underlying mental health concerns like BPD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) simultaneously.
Identifying concerns like BPD as a possible contributing factor or underlying cause of substance abuse matters because it means that individuals can identify their symptoms and triggers, increase distress tolerance, and learn healthier coping skills. Clients also work on communication skills and ways to navigate interpersonal relationships, which can be imperative for those with BPD.

How Our Programs Address BPD and Addiction
Since 90210 Recovery is an inpatient treatment center, clients will be distanced from daily life triggers and will have staff members available for support at all times. That said, we aren’t like other rehab centers. Our spacious facility is beautiful and bright, with high-end amenities. Clients are able to bring laptops for work if needed, and you will be able to stay connected to family members. With that in mind, here’s what to expect from our programs. Before you start treatment at 90210 Recovery, you’ll get an intake assessment, which will help us determine whether detox, etc., is clinically necessary.
If you are someone experiencing both substance addiction and BPD who needs help with withdrawal management, you may start treatment in detox. As an inpatient center, we offer medically supervised detox with staff present 24/7 to keep you safe during the withdrawal process and help you get sober safely. Getting off of alcohol and some drugs cold turkey can be physically dangerous and, in some circumstances, life-threatening. We’ll monitor your symptoms and provide medication or other treatments as needed. Detox typically lasts for 3-8 days and is a short-term precursor to inpatient rehab, where you’ll be able to focus on the deep healing work required for overcoming BPD and addiction.
In our inpatient rehab program, you will get comprehensive care for addiction, BPD, and any other mental health concerns you may need support with (e.g., anxiety). Your treatment plan will include therapies and other treatment approaches that best fit your needs. For example, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and other types of therapy that are evidence-based modes of addressing BPD. You may also participate in a range of other mental health and addiction treatments, including but not limited to the following.
- Art therapy
- Sound therapy
- Experiential therapy
- Motivational therapy
- Relationship therapy
- Breathwork
- Massage therapy
- Meditation and mindfulness
- Family therapy
- Process groups
- Life skills
Clients in inpatient rehab at 90210 Recovery follow a structured schedule and live on-site at our luxury facility. You’ll attend individual therapy 2-3 times per week in addition to daily groups and other treatment activities, such as exercise and fitness, outdoor activities, recreation, massage therapy, and yoga.
Before leaving 90210 Recovery, you’ll work with your treatment team to create a custom aftercare plan. Your aftercare plan, like treatment, will focus on your ongoing recovery from both BPD and addiction, potentially including:
- Referrals to outpatient treatment programs
- Referrals to therapists versed in BPD and addiction
- Continued medication management for BPD and addiction
- Job and education help
- Support groups
After treatment, you’ll have immediate access to our alumni support network. The alumni support network at 90210 Recovery provides continued support, guidance, and connection with other former clients. Community and security are two significant components of recovery for most people–we’re here to help from your first call to 90210 Recovery to the aftercare planning process and beyond.
